Locally unwanted land use.

Nuclear power plants belong to a category known as “undesirable facilities” and are often referred to as LULUs, or “locally unwanted land use.” LULUs are generally facilities in a community that are perceived by the community to have a negative effect and are thus publically opposed by the community, even if their leadership does not. LULUs like hazardous waste sites and landfills often have negative externalities, or negative costs that the producer does not pay for. These include air pollution, noise, water quality, undesirable land uses, increased risks of cancer and others and are separated into four broad categories: functional consequences, economic consequences, environmental consequences, and social consequences. With regard to economic consequences, LULUs can affect property values as well as the economy of the host community.

  • Will a nuclear power plant effect the reputation of the community as a safe place to live?
  • How will it impact property values and other businesses considering Victoria?
  • Will there be enough water for future economic development?

Here is a job posting in Braidwood Illinois from Exelon. This is the kind of jobs that Victoria residents will get from Exelon. Don’t be fooled. I find it odd that a company like Exelon doesn’t pay more than $9:50 an hour. Can anyone say “you want fries with that?” Go ahead, call the number in the text below, it’s real. Maybe Kenny can get a job doing this. He does have experience in dealing with trash.

I have to tune in with you Pittink, I was researching a few weeks ago and came across this Philly.Com and found an article “A jobs Boom is Shaking Nuclear Industry” March 9, 2008 The article talks about how a large number of nuclear workers will be retireing very soon and how the industry is looking for new, younger workers. It goes on to state that Exelon is hiring 2500 people in the next five years and goes on to say, Mr. Neal Coy, Exelon’s senior recruiter stated that inexperience engineer can start at $60,000.00, Craft people-electricians and mechanics can earn $43,000.00 and unlicensed operators will earn close to $50,000.00. Wow ! what a difference that the Victoria folks are being told by Exelon and the City,County, Chamber and VEDC. Now Mr. Coy of Exelon reported this in March,I guess we can look forward to a press release that Exelon has updated the salaries since then. This is also why the Perryman Report is so incomplete and just touting the billions coming to Victoria. If you believe that billions are coming to this community each year, I have some river front property for sale and its not in Arizona

A fact sheet from Exelon says:
“Construction and development will lead to incremental tax receipts over the build-out period, including $348 million to the state and about $70 million to local governments (school districts, cities, counties and others).

• Economic output—goods and services produced in the area – would increase even more over the construction period of the plant.
